The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021. Please join Dean Matthew Slaughter and Professor Peter Fisher for a fireside chat as they assess the impact of the Federal Reserve’s interventions to avert a financial crisis from COVID-19. Frontline’s recent documentary, “The Power of the Fed,” which features Professor Fisher along with other leading experts, warns that the Fed’s response to the pandemic may lead to “financial mania.” This in-person conversation broadcast live from campus will explore how current monetary policy relates to the 2008 financial crisis, how the last two years have differed, and what might happen next.
About the Panelists
Matthew J. Slaughter is the Paul Danos Dean of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where in addition he is the Earl C. Daum 1924 Professor of International Business. He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research; a member of the academic advisory board of the International Tax Policy Forum; and an academic advisor to the McKinsey Global Institute.
Peter R. Fisher is senior fellow at the Center for Business, Government & Society at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where he also serves as a clinical professor. He is a director of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Systemic Resolution of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and of the Advisory Board of the MIT Golub Center for Finance and Policy.

Karan Bhatia, vice president for global public policy and government relations at Google, will join Dean Matthew Slaughter in a wide-ranging conversation about the issues at the intersection of the digital economy, the global economy, and public policy. Karan will also share insights about his cross-sector career and lessons in leadership learned while serving as the Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, a role in which he oversaw U.S. international trade policy with respect to Asia and Africa, among his other senior public and private sector roles. Jingdong Hua, Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank, will join Dean Matthew Slaughter in conversation to discuss the role of the World Bank and other multilateral organizations in tackling large scale challenges including climate change and global poverty, helping to create a more resilient and sustainable global economy. Mr. Hua will share insights from his role as both the Treasurer of the World Bank, responsible for managing $200 billion debt and $170 billion asset portfolios, as well as his role as the Pension Finance Administrator, responsible for managing the World Bank’s $30 billion pension assets.
